Dhalla Empowers Youth at first Annual CULTURE SHOCK

Brampton, Ontario— On Saturday September 20th The Brampton-Springdale Youth Advisory Council (BCYAC) will host the first annual CULTURE SHOCK. The variety show will feature multicultural entertainment, spoken word poetry and motivational speeches in an effort to raise awareness about issues important to youth including racism, violence, building self esteem and the importance of young people being involved in the political process.

The Brampton-Springdale Youth Advisory Council was created in April 2008 by Dr Ruby Dhalla, Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale. The goal of BSYAC is to empower youth to actively participate in designing and developing solutions for issues that confront them. Composed of a group of dedicated students from schools across Brampton, the council has been successful in creating a dialogue between young people, community members and elected officials.

Of especial importance to this year’s CULTURE SHOCK is the launch of the “Get out There and Vote” Campaign, which encourages youth to understand the importance of voting and the role politics plays in shaping our future. The Campaign aims to empower youth with the belief that regardless of your political stripe, choosing to vote, is a step in the right direction.
